Emanuelson: Van Marwijk has lost his credibility
By Stefan Coerts
Jun 12, 2012 8:50:00 AM
The AC Milan midfielder missed out on Netherlands' 23-man squad for Euro 2012, and has now voiced his dismay with the national-team coach's decision to snub him
AC Milan's Urby Emanuelson has hit out at Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk for excluding him from Oranje's squad for Euro 2012, saying the former Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord boss has "lost his credibility".The 25-year-old appeared to be the main candidate to replace Erik Pieters at left-back after the PSV man was forced to withdraw from the provisional selection due to injury, despite playing much of the season for his club side in midfield.
However, Van Marwijk eventually plumped for promising youngster Jetro Willems and midfielder Stijn Schaars, and Emanuelson admits he has lost respect for the trainer following his decision, which he claims was not based on facts.
"He told me that I hadn't played at left-back enough, and that there was too much competition in midfield. I can only accept his decision, but it's not based on facts," Emanuelson said to Voetbal International.
"The coach said that I haven't played left-back for over two years, but I've played there regularly for Milan. I couldn't really do much with his explanation.
"You're no longer credible in my opinion [afterr such an explanation]. It's pretty clear for me. He doesn't like the footballer Emanuelson."
Emanuelson has made 15 international appearances for Netherlands to date, with his last cap coming in the Oranje's 3-2 friendly win over England in February.
