Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer received double the votes of any other player from our list of those who will be notable by their absences in the finals this month

The Spain striker has not played since last December after breaking his leg in Barcelona’s World Club Championship win over Al-Sadd, and was not included in Vicente Del Bosque’s squad for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
Despite the wealth of attacking talent at the disposal of the current European and World champions, a large majority felt that Spain’s record goalscorer will be sorely missed this summer, as he received 38.32 per cent of the votes.
England midfielder Frank Lampard came second in our poll, narrowly edging out Villa’s clubmate and compatriot Carles Puyol.
Lampard was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a thigh injury in training last week, whilst Spain captain Puyol is another long-term absentee following knee surgery towards the end of last season.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere received just over 11% of the vote, with the 20-year-old still sidelined following a series of injuries sustained since last summer, while Italy forward Giuseppe Rossi came fifth in our poll after he suffered a recurrence of a knee injury towards the end of the season.
Just under 5% of readers feel that Roy Hogdson’s decision to continually overlook Rio Ferdinand may come back to haunt the Three Lions, with Eric Abidal further behind after the Frenchman retired following liver surgery.
Just over 2.5% of you feel that another player will be the more sorely missed this summer, while Ivica Olic, Marko Marin and Bacary Sagna complete our poll with around 1% of the votes each.
