La Furia Roja suffered a scare but managed to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in Xavi's 100th game...Spain midfielder Xavi achieved the rare feat of winning 100 caps for his country in the 2-1 Euro 2012 Qualifier victory over Czech Republic. Although he was overjoyed with his milestone, the Barcelona midfielder insisted that three points were the important thing.
The win puts Spain six points ahead of their opponents on the night in Group I, as a win next week against Lithuania will all but secure qualification to Poland/Ukraine 2012 for the World and European champions.Xavi acknowledged that the game was difficult but was glad to emerge victorious after having to battle back from a goal down: “I’m happy for the win. The team had problems and we worked hard,” he said during the post-match interview.
“Throughout the game, we had control and in the second half we improved. It was a tough game and we did not expect a goal from them.”
The midfielder was then asked about his personal achievement and he replied: “I am very happy. I have wanted to continue participating here. I have a magnificent role in the team and I have to enjoy it.”
