Jean-Alain Boumsong: The France Team Is No Longer An Obsession

Though Jean-Alain Boumsong wouldn't reject a call from the France set-up, it's no longer a priority for the 30-year-old.
Panathinaikos centre-back Jean-Alain Boumsong may have effectively handed in his international retirement notice by stating to Canal Football Club on Sunday that he is no longer especially concerned about appearing for France.

Selected on 27 occasions to play for his country, Boumsong last turned out for les Bleus when they defeated Turkey 1-0 in a friendly international back in June 2009. He was thereafter overlooked by Raymond Domenech, and new coach Laurent Blanc has also snubbed the former Olympique Lyonnais and Juventus stopper.

Boumsong, however, has revealed that he is not especially concerned about playing in the Maillot du Coq anymore, though he would not turn his nose up at a call from ‘Le President’.

“The France team is no longer an obsession for me,” he said. “I focus on my club. In Greece, I also want to develop myself as a man. But if Laurent Blanc calls me, I would be present.”

A bear of a centre-back, Boumsong has not turned out regularly for the national side since 2006, when a run of 11 successive international appearances ended with a 1-0 success over Mexico in a home friendly.
