Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso could be set to miss this evening’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Lithuania in Salamanca after being struck down by a bout of flu.
AS reports that the cultured Real Madrid star struggled to take part in this mornings training session, and is thought to be a major doubt for the encounter, with team doctors providing coach Vicente del Bosque with regular updates as to his progress.
Should Alonso miss the match it would be represent a selection headache for Del Bosque, with a whole host of key players already missing from the squad through injury.
Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Pedro Rodriguez and Jesus Navas are all already missing from the match against their Group I opponents, leading to call-ups for Villarreal duo Borja Valero and Bruno Soriano, along with Valencia’s Pablo Hernandez.
Now the Spain coach may have to contend with the loss of one of his most experienced players.
