Caretaker Portugal Coach Agostinho Oliveira Vows To Win Remaining Qualifiers After Norway Loss; Tiago & Carvalho Seek Carlos Queiroz Return
Seleccao struggling in Group H...
By Paul Madden
Caretaker Portugal coach Agostinho Oliveira has vowed they will win their remaining Euro 2012 qualifiers after a 1-0 defeat to Norway left them in a precarious position but Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho have called for the case of Carlos Queiroz to be resolved swiftly.
A goalkeeping error from Eduardo allowed Eric Huseklepp to snatch the only goal of the game in Oslo, leaving the Seleccao with a tough task to escape Group H.
"With this defeat, the situation is not good. The situation is clearly worrying, but we have to see what we can do. We are in a group in which 18 or 19 points should be enough to get through and we have six games to play. Now, six times three equals 18, and we'll win them all, to absolute certainty," Oliveira told A Bola afterwards before noting he doesn't know how the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) will handle Queiroz's situation.
"The FPF will decide the future and I cannot predict it, but I must continue to serve the FPF."
Queiroz was suspended for six months for apparently insulting members of the anti-doping authority but with the matter now subject to an appeal from the coach, the players want the matter resolved quickly.
"I hope it gets resolved, as this will be good for all the Portuguese who want to go to the Euros. We're five points behind, but we can still give everything to get through," noted Tiago.
"It is important to resolve once and for all this situation. There are things that take time, but people have to make a decision. We have given our best on the field and the results are not helping. We all wanted better. The last game was pretty bad and today a small error cost us a goal. We have to turn things around and start winning," added defender Carvalho.
