Rafael Van Der Vaart Targets Netherlands Starting Berth
Rafael van der Vaart has made it clear that he wants a position in Netherlands' starting XI.
By Stefan Coerts
"It's always a bit of a blow for me when I found out that I start a match from the bench. I'm of the opinion that I should always play. Especially in a match against a team like San Marino, but also against stronger opponents," said Van der Vaart to Algemeen Dagblad.
"I'm not giving up though. Situations like this will only make me stronger. It doesn't make any sense to get angry about this."
Van der Vaart faces stiff competition from Wesley Sneijder for the playmaker position, but the former Real Madrid star feels like he can also play as a holding midfielder.
"I've already told the coach on more than one occasion that I can also play as one of our two more defensive midfielders. However, he has so far opted to field two more combative players in those positions.
"You never know though whether I will get a chance in that position in the future. I'm always disappointed when I don't play. I'm a sportsman and want to play as many games as possible."
