England Winger Adam Johnson: Three Lions Are Going To Switzerland To Win
Winger wants to break into starting eleven...
By Michael Landon
The 23-year-old is hopeful of becoming a mainstay in the England starting line-up, and his case will have been helped after he scored in the 4-0 victory over Bulgaria on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, the Manchester City ace said: "That's obviously my aim, to try and play as many games as I can and obviously break my way into the starting eleven, which is going to be tough because we have some world class players, but if I keep working hard hopefully I'll get in there.
"With every squad I'm in I feel more and more [part of the squad] but there's obviously some new faces in there as well. There's a lot of City boys in there which obviously helps you settle in quickly."
Johnson will hope to feature against Tuesday's group G opponents Switzerland and has claimed England should be confident enough to expect a win on foreign soil.
"We're going to have to be patient and move the ball around because I think they'll make it hard to break them down, which is going to be tough for us, but I think we're capable of getting a win, which is what we're looking to do," Johnson said.
"I think we've got to be looking for a win. Two wins out of two games would be perfect for us. If we do draw I don't suppose it's a disaster for us, it depends on how other results go, but I think we've got to be looking for a win and be confident enough to go there and do that."
Johnson's recent success in the national set-up is a far cry from the disappointment he suffered after not being selected as part of the World Cup squad who travelled to South Africa earlier in the summer and this is something the player wants to put behind him.
"I think the quicker we put that [World Cup] behind us the better. I was obviously involved in the Hungary game and everyone seemed to have put that behind them. Obviously I wasn't there, but that's how I felt but I think that's the best thing we can do now."
