The 22-year-old Benfica defender, who caught the eye with his solid displays during the 2010 World Cup, injured his right thigh in Friday's opening qualifier with Cyprus.
The news comes as another blow for Portugal with their coach, Carlos Queiroz, serving a suspension and their Euro 2012 opening qualifier ending in a dismal 4-4 draw against minnows Cyprus.
Coentrao underwent scans and it was decided that he will have to sit out of the clash in Norway.
