"It was not easy against this Belgian team who still have a decisive role to play in the group," the Bayern Munich man told Sporza.
A well-organised Belgian defence effectively nullified the Germans' counterattack, but the visitors were able to break through once, which was enough for Miroslav Klose to net the winner.
Philipp Lahm commented on the rather laborious nature of Germany's win.
"It's always difficult at the start of a campaign," the fullback said. "That is why it is important that we took all three points."
"Against such an opponent, you have to keep plugging away and then the chances will come. We have done that and we can therefore be satisfied."
Coach Joachim Loew echoed his Lahm's sentiments.
"It was an important win. We needed a while to get into our stride but in the second half our play improved greatly."
Following their victory, Germany are tied on points with Group A leaders Turkey. Die Mannschaft next face Azerbaijan next Tuesday.
