Portugal striker Hugo Almeida expects his nation to face a tough qualifying campaign for Euro 2012, ahead of their opening match versus Cyprus on Friday evening.

The Seleccao are in Group G alongside Denmark, Norway and Iceland as well as the Cypriots, with only the top team guaranteed a place in the finals held in Poland and Ukraine.

Speaking to journalists at the squad’s training camp prior to the match, the Werder Bremen striker said of the upcoming matches: “Qualifying won’t be easy for us, especially with Norway and Denmark, who have strong teams.

“We expect many difficult matches, particularly the away matches in Norway and Denmark. But we have a very strong team too, and it is our aim to qualify for the Euros.”

The 26-year-old also passed comment on the international retirement of Atletico Madrid winger Simao, stating that he will be a loss, but he hopes that a new generation of players will be able to fill his position.

Almeida added: “It was his decision. We will sure miss him, because he is a great player. But I am sure that there will be new players who can compensate.”
