Goal.com Player Of The Decade: Wide Attacker

Choose the best of the wide-men from the list shown below; four of the five have won the Ballon d'Or...

The Nominees

Luis Figo

One of the first to bear the tag 'Galactico', Figo was launched into superstardom when he left Barcelona for Real Madrid in 2001. A Ballon d'Or, two Liga titles and a Champions League triumph followed and he further swelled his medal collection with four Scudetti won with Inter. The leader of Portugal's Golden Generation, Figo represented his nation 127 times.

Ryan Giggs

The epitome of consistency, Ryan Giggs has been in the Manchester United first-team for nearly two decades. He has been central to all the successes of the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson, being the English game's most decorated player, and has seen it all throughout his time at Old Trafford. This decade, the Welshman has won a Champions League, a Club World Cup, six Premier League titles and a whole raft of individual accolades.

Lionel Messi

The current Ballon d'Or incumbent and reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi, has been a huge part of Barcelona's dominance of the Spanish and continental game in the latter stages of the decade. A treble-winner last season, he scored in the Champions League final against Manchester United. He is also a Summer Olympics Gold Medallist.

Pavel Nedved

A tour de force of energy and skill, Nedved was charged with the substantial task of replacing Zinedine Zidane at Juventus when the Frenchman moved to Real Madrid. He did so with gusto, helping the Bianconeri to four 'on-field' Scudetti, two of which were subsequently revoked. A Serie A winner with Lazio too, Nedved played a huge part in the Old Lady's run to the Champions League final in 2003. He missed the clash with Milan due to suspension but nonetheless was awarded the Ballon d'Or.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The world's most expensive footballer and former Ballon d'Or title holder, Cristiano Ronaldo was an integral part of Manchester United's success through the latter stages of the decade, winning Premier League titles, a Champions League and a Club World Cup among other honours. He represented Portugal in the European Championships final in 2004 and the World Cup semi-final in 2006. He has started life at Real Madrid with relish too and currently leads the Champions League scoring charts.
