The Nominees

Michael Ballack

A talismanic figure for Germany, Ballack led the Nationalmannschaft to the World Cup final in 2002, the semi finals in 2006 and the European Championship final in 2008. Astonishingly, he has been named in every Team of the Tournament since the Korea/Japan World Cup and has netted 42 international goals in almost a century of caps. Since arriving at Chelsea, he has gone close in the Champions League, losing a final, and won two FA Cups. Before that, he was a three-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern Munich, whom he joined from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frank Lampard

When Roman Abramovich and his world of wealth arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2003, it was widely expected that Frank Lampard would be jettisoned in favour of big money imports. However, he has gone on to become Chelsea's most effective midfielder this decade, making 164 consecutive Premier League appearances and netting the strikes that pushed the Blues to two Premier League triumphs. Also, he was a Ballon d'Or runner-up in 2005 and has earned 76 England caps, scoring 20 goals.

Andrea Pirlo

Alongside Gennaro Gattuso, Pirlo forms part of one of the greatest midfield tandems in the history of Italian football; winning a Scudetto, two Champions Leagues, a Club World Cup and a World Cup with his AC Milan colleague. He is widely recognised as the finest deep-lying playmaker of the past ten years and remains a focal point for club and country.

Paul Scholes

One of Sir Alex Ferguson's star academy graduates, Scholes has been a Manchester United regular since 1994. He has accrued a slew of honours, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League this decade, making over 600 appearances in the process. Once described by Zinedine Zidane as 'the greatest player of his generation'.

Xavi Hernandez

A Cantera product at Barcelona, Xavi epitomises the home-grown philosophy espoused at Camp Nou. The 29-year-old is second on the all-time appearance list for the Blaugrana and has been integral to all success in the past decade, having broken into the team in 1998. With him in the side, Barca have won it all; Spanish Leagues, Champions Leagues, Spanish Cups, Club World Cup and the European Super Cup. Also, Xavi is a major part of Spain's national team too, being named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2008, a competition which la Furia Roja won.
