This energetic affair between two of Africa’s finest Under-20 sides ended in favour of the Black Satellites, as goals from Kermit Erasmus and Andre Ayew sent the game to extra time, before a rocket from Dominic Adiyiah saw Ghana progress to the quarter-finals.

The game began in fast paced fashion, with both teams keen to progress to the quarter-finals of the Youth Championships. Ghana were favourites going into the encounter, but on the pitch South Africa did well to show that they were equals.

In the 19th minute the first yellow card was shown to Ghana’s Abeiku Quansah, with the player knowing that he would miss the next match if his side were to progress.

A great deal of respect was shared between Ghana and the next World Cup hosts, with both threatening to break the deadlock on a number of occasions. The best chance of the half fell to South Africa’s Serero however, as his 37th minute free kick curled towards the top corner before a fine save from Daniel Agyei sent it out for a corner.

South Africa finished the first half well, but Amajita could not find a way past the Black Satellites, and the half time whistle saw the players retreating to the tunnel with the score goalless after 45 minutes of play in Ismailia.

The second half began with the same intensity of the first, and it was clear that the sides were pumped to find a winner during the next 45 minutes.

The Ghanaian defence looked tough to beat, and the physical attributes of the Satellites were visibly put to good use as South Africa struggled to penetrate their back line. In the 56th minute a corner found its way to Kermit Erasmus, but the Amajita star player’s powerful strike was well saved by the Ghana keeper.

A minute later South Africa scored the opening goal of the game, as a quick free kick found Erasmus, and a fine first touch from the youngster took the ball away from the Ghana keeper, before moving around the stopper and finishing for his third of the tournament.

Ghana would soon be on level terms however, as captain Andre Ayew steered in a free kick with his head in the 66th minute.

Few clear-cut chances were created in the dying minutes of the second half, and the game went to extra time. The play in extra time was visibly more tentative from both sides, as a winner needed to be found in the final half an hour, with penalties following any stalemate.

In the 8th minute of extra time Ghana took the lead, as a fantastic strike from Dominic Adiyiah found the top corner of the net and broke South African hearts. A few minutes later the goal scorer found more space in attack, but South Africa’s Darren Keet clipped his pile driver over the top of the goal.

With 8 minutes remaining Opoku Agyemang received his marching orders after a second yellow card, but Ghana sensed that a win was on the cards.

The comeback from Ghana proved too much for South Africa, as Amajita were knocked out of the tournament with their heads held high, and Ghana progress to play Korea Republic in the quarter-finals.
