United Arab Emirates Under-20 2-2 South Africa Under-20: UAE Force Draw With Ten-Man South Africa
Two last gasp goals gave United Arab Emirates a useful draw after South Africa had taken a two-goal lead in the Group F match in Alexandria.
South Africa youths will feel like they lost two points that were already in the bag as they let a two-goal advantage slip to the UAE U-20s by the end of 90 minutes.
Amajita had the bulk of the possession in their opening encounter, and it translated into the South Africans taking the lead through Dutch-based Kermit Eramus.
Receiving the ball from substitute George Maluleka on the right, Erasmus took one touch to move past his marker before firing past the goalkeeper with his right foot.UAE's response was almost instant when Khalil found himself with just the keeper to beat, but Darren Keet stood up to the striker and deflected his shot wide for a corner with a slight touch from his right foot.
South Africa doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when Thulani Serero embarked on a surging run through the centre before picking out Malukela with a pass.
The Malukela-Erasmus combination worked well once more as the midfielder's low cross from the right was turned in from 12 yards by the in-form striker.
The match seemed to be winding down at that point, but the script for the encounter was still not complete, and South Africa captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele saw red in the 82nd minute following a tussle with Ahmed Ali, giving UAE an extra man advantage.
It seemed that Hamdan Al Kamali's penalty would be little more than a consolation, but in injury time Ahmed Ali's left-wing cross was met by Theyab Awana to give them a share of the spoils in the opening match for these two sides.
