While it was a good day for Obinna, Racing's African contingent were less than impressive. Papakouli Diop of Senegal was replaced shortly after the hour mark while Congolese forward Mohamed Tchite was dismissed to compound a poor evening for the hosts.
Champions Barcelona succumbed to an intense display from Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Caderon for their first league defeat of the season and had to cope without hte services of Seydou Keita of Mali, who had to be replaced in the early stages o the tie after tearing his hamstring.
Seydou's brother Sidi Keita proved Real Madrid's chief tormentor for large stages of Xerez's game with Los Blancos at El Chapin before Madrid scored three times in eight second half minutes to condemn the Primera Liga strugglers to yet another defeat. Keita's fellow Malian Mahamadou Diarra made a rare appearance for Los Merengues, coming on as a second half substitute in the win in Andalucia without really making a telling impression.
Cameroon shot stopper Carlos Kameni kept a clean sheet for the sixth time this season as Espanyol bounced back from last week's defeat to Real Madrid by defeating Deportivo La Coruna at the Cornell El Prat.
Sevilla put themselves back in the Champions League places thanks to a 1-0 win over Osasuna at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. The rudimentary victory was built on a cautious performance as the Andalusians look to end a turbulent spell ahead of a return to Champions League duty. Ivorian midfielder Didier Zokora was once again a telling influence while fellow countryman Christian Romaric made a late appearance. Mali forward Frederic Kanoute played an uneventful 55 minutes before being replaced by Alvaro Negredo.
Cameroonian striker Pierre Webo made a second half appearance in Mallorca's defeat to Tenerife but despite a couple of decent opportunities couldn't apply the finishing touch to get his team back into the game.
