Africans In Italy: Inter Striker Samuel Eto'o Finds Himself On The Scoresheet Again
Goal.com's Subhankar Mondal rounds up the key performances from African players in Serie A at the weekend.....
By Subhankar Mondal
The former Barcelona forward had a lively second half on the left side of the Inter attack and worked hard throughout. The 30-year-old was duly rewarded with a goal on 81 minutes when half-time substitute Mario Balotelli whipped in a cross from the right wing and Eto'o nudged the ball in. That made it 2-1 to Inter with just nine minutes of normal time remaining but Fiorentina equalised just a minute later through Per Kroldrup. The match finished 2-2.
The other African player featuring at the Franchi on Saturday night was a certain Sulley Muntari. The Ghanaian international midfielder came on as a substitute for Pandev on 71 minutes to shore up the midfield and did a good job of doing so too, although he did pick up a yellow card late on. Kenyan international midfielder McDonald Mariga was on the Inter bench as an unused substitute throughout the match.
The 2-2 draw displaced Inter from pole position in Serie A as Roma won their match on Sunday afternoon. So at the moment Jose Mourinho's side are second in the league standings with 67 points from 33 matches, a solitary point behind the Giallorossi. On the other hand, Fiorentina are eighth in the league with 46 points from 33 matches, five points off a Europa League spot.

Algerian forward Abdelkader Ghezzal was the main African hero in the Italian top flight this weekend as he scored a brace for Siena in their 3-2 win against Bari. The 25-year-old was on target for his first goal on 18 minutes when Marcelo Larrondo supplied the ball from the left wing and Ghezzal fired home from 12 yards out.
Then two minutes after the hour mark with his side trailing 2-1 and falling closer to relegation, Ghezzal struck as his lobbed ball from the edge of the Bari penalty area went past custodian Jean Francois Gillet. Siena eventually won the match 3-2 and stay 19th in the Serie A table with 29 points from 33 matches, just two points behind third-bottom Atalanta and six points behind 17th-placed Bologna.
Ghanaian international midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah enjoyed a fruitful afternoon on Sunday as Udinese defeated Livorno 2-0 in a relegation six-pointer at the Armando Picchi. The 21-year-old exhibited an encouraging performance in the middle of the park for the Bianconeri, who are 15th in the league standings with 38 points from 33 matches. Another Ghanaian player, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, was on the bench for the Udine-based club on Sunday afternoon as an unused substitute.
A number of African players missed out on Serie A action this weekend. Christian Obodo of Udinese, Stephen Appiah of Bologna, Stephen Ayodele Makinwa and Mourad Meghni of Lazio, Mohamed Sissoko of Juventus, Houssine Kharja of Genoa and Babacar Khouma of Fiorentina were unavailable for their respective clubs.
