Spanish Cumpleanos: Xabi Alonso
Every weekday Goal.com celebrates the birthday of past and present La Liga-related figures. Today includes all those born on November 25.
1938: Severino Reija: This former international defender was part of the Spain side that won the European Championships in 1964 and also played in the 1962 and 1966 World Cup finals, winning 20 caps in total. In his club career, he started out with Deportivo La Coruna but spent most of his career playing for Real Zaragoza where he won two Copa del Rey crowns.
1951: Johnny Rep: Dutch forward Rep spent most of his career in the Netherlands but had a two-year spell with Valencia, after his most successful term with Ajax where he won the European Cup, a Dutch league title and two European Super Cups. Rep was also an integral part of the Holland national team that got to two World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978. He won a total of 42 caps for the Oranje.
1981: Xabi Alonso: Midfielder Alonso began his career with Real Sociedad and was a key member of the first team when they almost pipped Real Madrid to the Primera Liga title in 2002/03, finishing just two points behind Los Blancos. After a largely impressive five-year spell with Liverpool, where he won the UEFA Champions League in his first season, Alonso returned to Spain, joining Real Madrid as part of Florentino Perez's summer revolution. Alonso has won 65 caps for Spain but featured mainly as a substitute in their Euro 2008 success.
