Calcio Compleanno: Alain Boghossian
Every weekday Goal.com celebrates the birthday of past and present Calcio-related figures. Today includes all those born on October 27...
1945: Giuseppe Wilson (64) – English-born Italian defender who earned a move to Lazio in 1969, after seven seasons in the lower levels of the peninsula. Unfortunatel, in his third year the Aquile were relegated. However, incredibly, just two seasons later he was an integral part of the side that would go on to claim the club’s first ever Scudetto. Sits in second place in terms of appearances made in all competitions for the Roman outfit with 400 to his name.
1966: Antonio Manicone (43) – Current assistant coach of the Inter youth team, some 23 years after making his first appearance for the club at that level. Enjoyed success with Palermo and Foggia in his playing days, claiming a Serie C2 and Serie B title respectively, whilst in 1994 he was fortunate enough to lift the UEFA Cup with the Nerazzurri after defeating the Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in the final.
1970: Alain Boghossian (39) – French World Cup winner from 1998 who joined Napoli from Marseille in 1994. Despite excelling with the Partenopei, he was offloaded to Sampdoria the season prior to the showpiece tournament and would go on to make 33 appearances for them, scoring six times, including a memorable performance in his side’s comprehensive 6-3 victory over his former club. After lifting the World Cup in his homeland, he joined Parma for a further four seasons, before a brief stint at Espanyol bought his career to an end. Made 26 appearances for France, including a substitute appearance in the ‘98 final against Brazil.
1971: Theodoros Zagorakis (38) – Greek icon who sits comfortably on top of the nation’s all-time appearance list. After being a key component of the Greece side that would go on to stun the continent when they won the European Championship in 2004, he earned a move to Bologna in Italy. His consistent performances were not enough for the Rossoblu, though, as they were eventually relegated after losing a play-off tie against Parma 2-1.
1979: Ivica Iliev (30) – Former Serbian international, who managed only two appearances in 2003, scoring on one occasion. After making his mark for Partizan Belgrade, he joined the newly promoted Messina in Serie A, proving to be a revelation in the club’s stunning return to the topflight for the first time in over four decades. The Sicilian outfit finished seventh, challenging the top sides throughout the campaign. After a brief loan stint at Genoa, he returned to the south but financial problems resulted in him leaving for the Greek outfit PAOK. Currently with the Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv.
1992: Stephen El Shaarawi (17) – Egyptian-born Italian striker who has experience of representing the nation at both Under-17 and Under-20 levels. The Genoa midfielder has managed one appearance for the first team to date on December 21 last year in a 1-0 victory away from home against Chievo. Has made 16 appearances for the Under-17’s since the age of 14, scoring six times.
