Goal.com WPS Player Of The Week: Kelly Smith, Boston Breakers

Helping her club to a 1-0-1 record last week, and pulling to just two points of second place, Kelly Smith and her three goals and one helper earns WPS player of the week honors.

Since the WPS All-Star Game, the Boston Breakers have been arguably the hottest club in the league, climbing up the WPS table with its 6-1-1 record. So without question, the Breakers have been aided by a number of great performances.

Of course, the emergence of Jordan Angeli, which led to her being awarded July's player of the month, would be a no brainer. But still in preparation of each game, there's one player every coach points to of how to stop Boston's attack: Kelly Smith.

The English international was an all star, but has quietly moved her way up the goal-scorers leaderboard, totaling 10 on the season thus far -- six goals in her last four games.

Just last week, in Boston's 2-0 win over Atlanta on Wednesday and 2-2 draw at Philadelphia on Sunday night, Smith netted three goals to singlehandedly pull the Breakers within two points of Philadelphia for second in the standings.

For that feat, Smith is this week's Goal.com WPS Player of the Week.

And when Smith wasn't putting the ball in the net herself, she was setting up the goal scorer.

In the lone goal Smith didn't score in the week, she was pivotal to the build up of the goal, setting up Lauren Cheney for the game's first goal against Philadelphia on Sunday.

And outside of the second goal in the Atlanta game, each goal scored was either a tying or go-ahead goal, which speaks to the clutch play the English international brings to the club -- and why so many coaches fear her.

Leading into the key match-up with Philadelphia, Independence coach Paul Riley said, "The key is to cut down Kelly Smith's influence on the game;" and before the game against Atlanta, Beat coach Gareth O'Sullivan simply said, "Kelly Smith is a handful."

Neither club was able to take its focus on her and quiet her game.

Philadelphia Independence midfielder Holmfridur Magnusdottir (2 goals vs. Boston on Aug. 8) and Washington Freedom striker Abby Wambach (2 goals vs. Philadelphia on Aug. 4) also received consideration for the Week 17 honor.
