Chicago Red Stars Have No Answer For Rodriguez & Philadelphia Independence

Philadelphia easily handle Chicago 3-0 behind A-Rod brace.

The Chicago Red Stars (4-8-5, 17 points) ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday night at John A. Farrell Stadium in West Chester, Penn., as the Philadelphia Independence (9-5-3, 30 points) continued their run of form with a dominating 3-0 win.

Philly coach Paul Riley may have conceded first place to FC Gold Pride, but his players were apparently not listening. With tonight’s result and last Saturday’s 4-1 triumph over defending WPS champs Sky Blue FC, the Independence are up a combined 7-1 over their opponents in their last two games.

Rodriguez got the scoring started for Philadelphia in the 12th minute, off an assist from Lori Lindsey. A-Rod did it again in the 25th, this time from Nikki Krzysik.

Not content to just score goals, Rodriguez assisted on a Caroline Seger score in the 56th.

Philly keeper Val Henderson kept a clean sheet. The Red Stars managed nine shots, but only one was on goal.

Chicago had a chance to move into third place before the night’s action began. But with the Red Stars’ loss and Atlanta’s 3-2 win over Washington, the Red Stars are now just a point ahead of the last-place Beat in the WPS standings.

With their win, Philadelphia solidifies their hold on second place, but remain a whole 10 points behind league leaders FC Gold Pride.

The Independence next travel to Maryland to face the Washington Freedom, on Wednesday, Aug. 4. The Red Stars will visit New Jersey to play Sky Blue FC on Sunday, Aug. 1.
