Under-21 Championship Player Ratings: Germany 4–0 England
Germany cruised past England to be crowned U-21 European Champions. Goal.com rates the performers on show …
GERMANYNeuer: 6.5 - May be surprised at how quiet an evening he had and in truth he simply wasn’t tested.
Beck: 8.0 – Was the match winner last time out and had some important moments again. Cleared from Johnson from close range before blocking Cattermole’s header on the line.
Howedes: 7.5 - The Schalke centre-back has been one of the players of the tournament and had yet another impressive evening.
Boateng: 7.0 – The Hamburg man made some important tackles particularly on Walcott early on and Milner on the half hour mark.
Boenisch: 6.5 – A few shaky moments but also might have scored with a fierce shot in the first half.
Johnson: 6.5 – A quiet first half but better after the break and a great run across goal early in the second half which almost handed him a tap-in.
Castro: 7.0 – Scored against England in the group stage and netted again with a deft finish.
Hummels: 7.5 – Hit an optimistic shot well over early on but otherwise a strong display and made two great blocks to deny Walcott.
Khedira: 6.5 – The skipper was solid and set up Ozil for a decent chance.
Ozil: 8.5 – Great vision and passing, he caused England all sorts of problems. Set up two of the goals and adding the second, with a little help from Loach.
Wagner: 8.0 – Had a quiet game but exploded towards the end. Missed a sitter with 15 minutes to go but quickly made up for it by tucking his first away minutes later before adding a super, curling second late on.
Substitutes
Schwaab: 6.5 – Hit a decent shot just over the bar after a good turn.
Aogo: n/a
Schmelzer: n/a
ENGLAND
Loach: 4.0 - Only his second international start but one to forget. Had a nightmare with the second goal, making a complete mess of Ozil’s free-kick.
Cranie: 5.0 - Couldn’t catch Castro for the opener and was well beaten by Ozil late on who set up Wagner.
Richards: 6.0 – A busy evening, made some good blocks but was also beaten at times. Moved up front towards the end but made no impact.
Onuoha: 6.0 – A steady first half but failed to emerge for the second and was replaced by Mancienne.
Gibbs: 6.5 – Did fairly well against Johnson and kept the German relatively quiet.
Cattermole: 6.5 – Made a couple of good runs but they both fizzled out without getting anywhere. Clipped the crossbar with a good shot and had another header cleared off the line.
Muamba: 6.0 - Read the game well, tidied up when needed and strong in the tackle but could have used possession better.
Noble: 6.0 – The skipper covered an awful lot of ground but simply couldn’t get England going forward.
Milner: 6.5 – Showed great feet at times, wasn’t afraid to shoot and did really well to set up Johnson for a great chance.
Johnson: 6.0 - Made a couple of runs and had a good chance with a flick which Beck cleared but could not provide enough support to Walcott.
Walcott: 5.0 - Blazed an early chance over and that was his best opportunity as he found himself increasingly isolated.
Substitutes
Mancienne: 6.5 – Tried to get England going from the back and distributed the ball well.
Gardner: 6.0 - Decent effort from a free kick late on.
Rodwell: n/a
