Hart 6 – Had an early mix-up with Mancienne that almost cost England and was then sent the wrong way from Sparv’s penalty. Made a few solid stops late on but wasn’t overly threatened.
Cranie 7.5 – Started quietly at right-back but then moved into the centre of defence after Mancienne’s sending off. He fared extremely well there and helped to combat the threat of Sadik.
Richards 8 – Struggled initially to cope with Sadik but improved hugely in defence as the game went on, showing great strength. Then, he scored the winning goal with a thumping header.
Mancienne 4 – It wasn’t a good 30 minutes on the pitch for the Chelsea defender. He almost cost his side a goal in the early stages after a mix-up with Hart and then hauled down Sadik to get himself sent off and concede a penalty, from which Sparv equalised for Finland.
Gibbs 7 – A good performance from the Arsenal full-back. Defensively solid and going forward he contributed with some accurate long balls and menacing runs down the left.
Walcott 5 – Struggled to get involved in the game out on the right and saw little of the ball. Replaced by Campbell at half-time after he failed to make an impact
Muamba 6 – Didn’t see too much possession but put in a few decent challenges over the course of the game.
Cattermole 7.5 – Took his goal well, arriving late into the box and got the luck he deserved with the slight deflection. From then on he worked hard to shield the back four as Finland had more of the ball with the numerical advantage.
Noble 6.5 – Composed in possession and had a few bright moments but was restricted in what he could do with England on the back-foot for most of the second half.
Milner 7 – Dropped back to right-back and did well after Mancienne’s removal and took the corner that resulted in Richards’ goal after coming close with a free-kick.
Agbonlahor 7 – Created the first goal as he showed good pace and strength before finding Cattermole. Always a threat and provided England with an option running in behind. Subbed late on in a tactical change.
Campbell 6 – Came on for the second half and started well as he found space in behind the Finland defence and put himself about up-front. However, he faded as the half progressed.
Rodwell n/a – Came on to shore things up for five minutes at the end.
Tomkins n/a – On for the final seconds after Richards picked up a knock.
Jaakkola 6.5 – Could not do anything about either of the goals and didn’t have too much to do over the course of the 90 minutes. Made one decent stop from a Milner free-kick.
Aho 7 – Solid defensively and also provided a decent threat going forward, particularly in the second half when he got some decent balls into the penalty area from right-back.
Portin 5 – Looked composed on the ball but is marked down for his mistake which led to England’s first goal. Agbonlahor got past him far too easily and then squared to allow Cattermole to score.
Turunen 7 – Very strong at the back and didn’t give the England attackers much change throughout the match.
Raitala 6 – Did his job defensively containing Walcott in the first half, but other than that struggled to affect the game despite Finland’s numerical advantage.
Hamalainen 5 – A quiet display from Hamalainen, who had little influence on proceedings. Guilty of leaving the far post when Richards’ header found the exact spot he should have been occupying. Substituted towards the end.
Mehmet Hetemaj 6 – Made a few decent challenges tracking back but didn’t create enough for his side from midfield, which is what was required of him with the extra man.
Sparv 7 – A good performance from the Finland captain. He created the opening for the penalty with a well weighted pass and stepped up to convert it himself and was neat and tidy in midfield.. Lost Richards for the winning goal, though.
Perparim Hetemaj 7.5 – Perparim Hetemaj was Finland’s main source of inspiration. A real threat from set-pieces, long-range efforts and from his crosses, all that was lacking was a goal to complete the performance.
Parikka 6.5 – Parikka was lively enough whenever he was on the ball and got a few decent deliveries into the box as well as almost capitalising on an early England defensive mix-up. He didn’t get enough service to make a huge impact though, unlike Sadik.
Sadik 7.5 – In the first half Sadik was almost unplayable for the England defence. He held everything up and brought the Finland midfield into the game superbly before winning the penalty and getting Mancienne sent off. In the second half, though, he found it harder to find space as England grew wiser to his threat.
Teemu Pukki 6.5 – The Sevilla youngster came on with 25 minutes to go and put in a confident performance. Came extremely close late on when he battled his way past Cranie and forced Hart into a low save.
Vasara 6.5 – The hero of Finland’s qualification came on for the closing 10 minutes and looked lively. He came close to a goal when his header struck the side netting.
Hakola n/a – Thrown on for the last five minutes as the Finns searched desperately for an equaliser.
