thumbnail Hello,

Join Goal.com in saluting another player worthy of global recognition

Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #114: Luis Suarez
Club:
Liverpool
Country: Uruguay
Age: 24
Role: Forward
Achievement: Inspired Uruguay to Copa America triumph

Luis Suarez cemented his reputation as one of the most fearsome forwards in world football with a sensational performance for Uruguay in the Copa America.

The Liverpool striker had a fruitful competition in Argentina and enjoyed a week to remember. The 24-year-old scored both goals in his team's 2-0 victory over Peru in the semi-finals and then opened the scoring after just 12 minutes in their 3-0 win against Paraguay in the final on Sunday.

Suarez, formerly with Dutch powerhouse Ajax, was overwhelmed with Uruguay's 15th Copa America triumph and stated after the match: "Luckily, we reached the goal of getting to the final, which was what we wanted, and winning the title is the maximum you can get.

"We have a huge joy to give this title to our people, this is an indescribable feeling."

In a week where there was precious little football other than the premier South American competition, Suarez once again exhibited his class and quality.

Congratulations to Luis Suarez, Goal.com's 114th World Player of the Week!

Honourable Mentions

Paolo Guerrero - Peru

The Peru international striker finished the Copa America as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals. Guerreo struck twice in the group stage and netted a brilliant hat-trick against Venezuela in their 4-1 victory in the third-placed match on Saturday.

Diego Forlan - Uruguay

The Atletico Madrid forward did not enjoy as prolific a competition as he had last summer during the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, but he proved himself to be an able leader in attack for his country. Forlan scored twice in the final in Uruguay’s 3-0 victory over Paraguay and was the architect of his team’s offensive play in the prestigious South American competition.

Gervinho - Arsenal

The Ivory Coast international struck on his debut for the Gunners as he netted both goals in their 2-1 win against Koln in a pre-season victory on Saturday. It was a non-competitive game but Gervinho proved why manager Arsene Wenger has so much faith in him.
