Goal.com World Player Of The Week: Mohamed Nagy 'Gedo' - Egypt
Join Goal.com in saluting another global player worthy of recognition...
Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...Goal.com World Player of the Week #37: Mohamed Nagy 'Gedo'
Club: Al-Ittihad Al-Sakndary
Country: Egypt
Age: 25
Role: Attacker
Achievement: Scoring the winning goal for the Pharaohs in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Egypt have won a third successive Africa Cup of Nations title. Whilst some of the old guard, Amr Zaki and Mohamed Abo Terika in particular, have been absent, the onus has fallen on a new breed of player to take the Pharaohs to the upper echelons of the African game.
Cometh the hour, cometh Gedo. Egypt's newest footballing sensation was one of the outstanding performers in Angola. Despite not starting a game, Gedo took home the golden boot with a sequence of five strikes.
He netted late goals against Nigeria, Mozambique, Cameroon, Algeria and Ghana to announce his arrival on the global scene.
Credit must go to Hassan Shehata, who, throughout the tournament, knew just exactly when to deploy his 12th man.
Gedo came up with the goods and can now be considered a key man for his nation.
Congratulations to Gedo, our 37th Goal.com World Player of the Week!
Honourable Mentions:
Nani - Manchester United
A sublime piece of skill from the Portugal international preceded the opening goal for the Red Devils against Arsenal and Nani added an assist for Wayne Rooney's strike, which gave the guests an insurmountable lead at the Emirates. A splendid fortnight suggests that Nani is finally emerging from the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Mauro Boselli - Estudiantes
The Argentina international has picked up where he left off before Christmas for South America's champions, scoring a brace in the club's first Clausura match of the season; a 3-0 win over Arsenal. His excellent form has attracted the attentions of some of Europe's top clubs but the Rat Stabbers will be hoping to hold onto their star forward until the end of this campaign.
Guti - Real Madrid
The veteran midfielder is included on the back of one sublime piece of skill as los Blancos finally broke their Riazor hoodoo against Deportivo. To clinch the game, Guti supplied Karim Benzema with the easiest of finishes after an ingenius and visionary backheel when he had, himself, the goal at his mercy.
