Goal.com World Player Of The Week: Seydou Keita

Join Goal.com in saluting another global player worthy of recognition...

Mali international and new Barcelona signing, formerly of Sevilla, Seydou Keita.
Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #34: Seydou Keita
Club: Barcelona
Country: Mali
Age: 29
Role: Midfielder
Achievement: Inspiring his nation to a back-from-the-brink draw in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mali were rudderless during Sunday's Cup of Nations opener against Angola in Luanda; by the 70th minute, the Eagles were 4-0 down and heading for a crushing defeat.

Unable to start the game, reportedly due to injury, Barcelona's Seydou Keita was sprung from the bench during the first half in order to add some composure to the play of Stephen Keshi's side. However, things did not go to plan for the midfielder, as he was responsible for the concession of a penalty, which led the Black Antelopes to their advantageous position.

Nonetheless, Keita dug deep and inspired his side. A fortunate goal set Mali on their way; the former Sevilla man bundled home from close range. Following Frederic Kanoute's header, Mali suddenly had it all to play for. Keita stuck again, steering an accurate volley past Carlos in the Angola goal.

From there, Mali went on to level the game, deep into stoppage time, to complete a resounding comeback, at the heart of which was Seydou Keita. If the Eagles are to make an impression in Angola, they will need more of the same from their talisman.

Congratulations to Seydou, our 34th Goal.com World Player of the Week!

Honourable Mentions:

Lionel Messi - Barcelona

The best player in the world was his usual effervescent self as Barca crushed Tenerife in the Canaries. Messi reeled off a hat-trick, one of which was the most delicate of lobs.

Ronaldinho - AC Milan

There have been signs of late that the former Blaugrana standout has been approaching his best for the Rossoneri. Two goals, both from open play, helped Milan to a convincing 3-0 win away at Juventus.

Wesley Sneijder - Inter

It's been a long time since Jose Mourinho lost a home game, coming up to eight years now, and the self-proclaimed 'Special One' has Wesley Sneijder to thank for preserving his record. Two free-kicks and an all action display helped Inter battle back against Siena, before Walter Samuel took all the points for the Nerazzurri in injury time.
