Iraq: Former Assistant Calls For Bora Milutinovic To Be Replaced As Coach

All is not well in the Iraq camp with the Confederations Cup just around the corner...

Bora Milutinovich
After his shock departure as assistant coach of Iraq, Radhi Shnishel has attacked the coaching methods of Serbian coach Bora Milutinovic.

Rahdi, who acted as caretaker coach before Milutinovic's appointment in April, walked out of Iraq's training camp last week.

Talking to Al-Iraqiya Sports Channel, Rahdi called for Milutinovic's speedy replacement, declaring him ‘not qualified’ to lead the team at the Confederations Cup.

The Asian champions are presently preparing for the competition that kicks off on June 14 in South Africa.

Iraq will play Spain, New Zealand and host nation South Africa.

Radhi explained to the presenter Taha Abou Raghef that the reason behind his shock resignation were the actions of the coach in the training sessions.

He claimed that the coach, who has led five different nations in five World Cups, lacked the kind of professional approach needed before an important international tournament such as the Confederations Cup.

"The foreign coach... is not currently qualified to lead our national team for the upcoming Confederations Cup that is about to start and does not even have a method in training," Radhi said.

He added that Bora’s training sessions were more about fun than football and that the Serbian justified this to him by stating that he was working on the psychology of the players.

The former national captain, however, was not convinced with Bora’s approach, commenting that he had spent a great deal of time with many foreign coaches over the last 14 years as a player and coach but had never come across such unorthodox methods.

"I thought that our training camp in Qatar would be great, but I was surprised by Bora's approach, who knows nothing about the players," Radhi said.

"The training sessions were theatrical and there is no way that I would accept being a part of something so fundamentally wrong… Also, I couldn't remain quiet because that would be equivalent to betraying Iraq."
