Elias Hernandez was happy to just be part of the national team; scoring a goal makes it even more memorable.
Elias Hernandez was the other Hernandez on the Mexican national team.
With Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez garnering all the attention, the Manchester United youngster would likely have been the first Hernandez to score against Colombia on Tuesday.
But it was Elias Hernandez who knocked in the game-winning goal as Mexico beat Colombia 1-0.
And much like his higher-profile Tricolor teammate, Hernandez enthusiastically celebrated the goal.
"I am happy with having scored the goal," Hernandez told MedioTiempo.com. "I believe we had to take that thorn out of our sides from our loss to Ecuador and we were able to play a great game."
The goal was Hernandez's first with Mexico. That he's even part of the team was a dream come true, and his goal makes the dream call-up even more memorable.
"Truthfully I don't have words to describe what I felt being able to score for the national team," Hernandez said. "I was happy for the call-up, and now imagine having a goal on top of that. I am very happy because I know the work I have done is paying off and this is something incredible."
What makes the moment more memorable was to have heard the stadium react to his goal as the cheers in Estadio Universitario were enormous when Hernandez found the back of the net.
"It was always a dream to wear the national team jersey, and more to score a goal," he said. "I felt emotional and I'm living through a fantastic experience. To see and to hear how the people exploded with the gave me goosebumps."
