Editors' Roundtable: Summer Transfer Talk
The Goal.com editors discuss the comings and goings throughout world football this summer.
Allen Ramsey: I think right now the best move is Liverpool's signing of Joe Cole. They needed another star to take some of the load off of Torres and Gerrard, and let's face it, Joe Cole is a beast when he's on form.
Zac Lee Rigg: When he's on form and when he's fit.
Seth Vertelney: And he was free too. Except for, you know, 90,000 pounds per week.
Shane Evans: Yeah, that's no little wage packet. I have a feeling he's going to earn it though. They haven't had a good wide man in a while.
Canales: Thierry Henry looks like he's already inspired his new MLS teammates. Sometimes when you have a big star getting extra defensive attention, it just opens things up.
Ramsey: I would actually put New York and Henry as one of the best signings so far. Henry makes that team better just by being at practice, much less when he puts the jersey on and actually plays in an MLS game. Not too many teams can say they got that much of a boost from one guy, but for New York it has been a great summer.
Canales: Sir Alex Ferguson seems stoked about Chicharito. I think he's a good transfer, but he shoulnd't be counted on to make an impact for a while. He's young. Give him time.
Ramsey: We'll see. I still think a loan deal is in the cards in the near future, but I love the way Hernandez plays.
Vertelney: For some bad business, naturally let's talk about Manchester City. £25 million for David Silva is too much, and they are about to pay £30 million for James Milner, who is good, but he also cost Aston Villa £12 million just two years ago.

Ramsey: It's City. That's what they do.
Evans: They are blowing things up. Big time.
Canales: Not to mention the money they could be splashing out on Landon Donovan to be a backup.
Rigg: Heard an interesting thought the other day. Man City will have to loan out a handful of players this year to get the squad small enough. If they place the players strategically on midtable clubs, they can make life harder on their rivals.
Evans: Ha would be funny. But wouldn't that also hurt themselves?
Rigg: No, loan players can't play against their parent club. So all they have to do is buy every player in the Premier League and loan them back and the title is theirs.
Ramsey: I think Zac is correct, at least as far as the English FA is concerned.
Vertelney: Whatever the case, there is going to be a massive firesale in the next couple weeks, due to the new roster rules.
Canales: Yeah, but those also affect loans. Man City can only loan out two players, according to the new league rules.
Ramsey: Either way, City will have to get rid of some seriously talented players before the season starts. In other words, any team looking for a striker should call City, they have 17.
Evans: At least.
Ramsey: Is anybody shocked at how tame the market has been so far? It seems like we're still waiting on the big teams to start making big moves.
Evans: I think it's going to go out with a bang like it did last season.
Rigg: I think most of the big players are still on vacation after the World Cup. We'll see more moves closer to the deadline.
Bueno: To be fair too, some moves were made before the World Cup. Hernandez to ManU, Villa to Barcelona...Mourinho to Real Madrid as well.

Vertelney: Manchester United and Chelsea have each done nothing of late. I'd expect to hear from them in the next couple weeks.
Ramsey: I just felt like there would be a big splurge after the World Cup, and up to now it hasn't happened. I think it's coming, but I figured it would be going strong by now.
Canales: Well, a lot of those who impressed at the World Cup which usually drives transfer interest, are already in long-term contracts to big teams already. Most of the Spain dudes, barring Fabregas, weren't looking to move.
Bueno: Efrain Juarez to Celtic doesn't qualify? Nah, I know that's not a big move by global standards but that raised some eyebrows in Mexico.
Rigg: Real Madrid shipped out its two longest serving players. Think Mourinho makes up for those losses?
Evans: I think they were gone, regardless, Zac.
Canales: Yeah, but who does Mou bring in? Or does he bother?
Vertelney: I'd bet Mourinho gets either Ashley Cole or Maicon.

Evans: Maicon, definitely. I think, otherwise, Mourinho is happy with who is there. And don't forget Angel Di Maria.
Rigg: Canales, too. Not Andrea.
Canales: Yes, my cousin should do well.
