Mexico's Javier Aguirre: There Are Reasons To Dream

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre says there are plenty of reasons for Mexico supporters to dream ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

Mexico has reached the second round in each of the last four World Cups, but the quarterfinals have thus far been out of reach for El Tri.

Now, however, El Tricolor are primed for a run like none other. At least, manager Javier Aguirre said so.

"I should confess that there are solid arguments to allow us to dream," Aguirre said in an interview with Mexican daily Reforma. "I probably have in my hands the best generation of young Mexicans ever, already winners of a World Cup. That group of players has already been a world champion."

On the roster Aguirre selected to face North Korea, only Patricio Araujo was on the 2005 Under-17 World Cup squad. However, a quartet of players is around and could be set for quite a bit of playing time in South Africa - Giovani Dos Santos is one of the team's stars while Efrain Juarez, Carlos Vela and Hector Moreno are call fighting for starting spots.

While it's easy for outsiders to point to the young talent and say the team is headed in the right direction, Aguirre said he does so because he can compare players from present to past.

"I've been around (four generations). I believe I have more than 200 games with the national team in various capacities," he said. "I believe I know what I'm talking about."

In 2002, Aguirre led Mexico to the World Cup and El Tricolor won their group with wins over Croatia and Ecuador and a draw against Italy. Mexico had played some of the tournament's best football in the group stage but dreams died in the second round in a 2-0 loss to the United States.

Since then, Aguirre has managed Osasuna and Atletico de Madrid and has gained a different perspective on things.

"I have experience in Europe. I've worked outside of my country. I have one World Cup under my belt," Aguirre said. "I won't make the same mistakes that I could have made and have made in the World Cup eight years ago. So, it stands to reason that there are no excuses, no reasons why we can't make this the best World Cup in my country's history, outside of our own. We were sixth in '70 and '86 as hosts, as visitors, we've only been 11th. So there are a lot of reasons to dream."

If it's on him to improve, Aguirre said he has and will continue to do so even though he said he's not perfect.

"I've developed my abilities to work, to train, have informed myself more, I have more or use more common sense, I'm not so visceral," he said. "I feel like I've matured. That doesn't mean I won't make bad decisions, or that I'm a person who doesn't make mistakes. But I won't make the same mistakes I made in the past."

Coupled with the squad of talent at his disposal, Aguirre's experience and work ethic should give supporters high hopes from South Africa this summer.

"People can dream," he said. "They should."
