Marathon 2-0 Pumas: Reserves Make Costly Mistakes For Pumas
Pumas' youngsters committed two infractions inside the penalty area, which led to the final margin of victory for Marathon.
With just three experienced players in the starting lineup - Francisco Palencia, Ismael Iñiguez and Carlos Humberto Gonzalez - Pumas suffered a rough go at the match as Pumas gave up two penalty kicks to the Hondurans.
Pumas' David Cabrera gave up a penalty in the 16th minute when he knocked down Guillermo "Pando" Ramirez inside the box. Cabrera appeared to touch Ramirez's back rather than drag him down but once the Guatemalan hit the ground, the spot kick was given. Walter Martinez took the spot kick buried his attempt.
Marathon had a few chances to increase their lead, but were hit with a bit of misfortune. First, Pumas' Alejandro Palacios made a diving save of a shot from Carlos Mejia. Later, Mejia again fired a shot and beat Palacios this time but saw his shot hit the post.
Pumas' lone chance of the first half came on a free kick that Cabrera took. The shot forced 'keeper Orin Vallecillo to dive and parry the ball away.
Marathon pressured Pumas late in the second half and received help from Pumas defense. Fernando Massiel Santana stopped the ball with his hand and Marathon had their second penalty of the match.
Mejia took the shot and converted the kick to give Marathon the final margin of victory.
