The Iraqis, though, were far more pleased about the outcome, with a valuable point giving them hope of qualifying for the second phase of the tournament.
Goalkeeper Mohammed Kasid certainly thought so, telling ART, "This point is important to qualify for the second round. I promise the Iraqi people that we will will not let you down."
Star forward Younis Mahmoud shared his goalkeeper's opinion, highlighting that one victory in their remaining group games against European champions Spain and unfancied outsiders New Zealand, would see them progress in the compeition.
"It was good point and we will use it to qualify," he said.
"We missed many players due to injury, and the match was very difficult due to great support from fans of South Africa.
"Our performances will improve in our forthcoming games, as we gained some good experience from this match.
"If we win in another match, we will qualify," he concluded.
