Confederations Cup: South African People Get Ready For The Big Kick-Off
Goal.com's Peter Pedroncelli talked to some South African fans about the Confederations Cup, which will kick-off tomorrow afternoon.
Tomorrow afternoon the sixth edition of the Confederations Cup kicks off in South Africa with a match between the host nation and Iraq. Goal.com's Africa Editor Peter Pedroncelli took to the streets and talked to some local fans about their expectations for the tournament.
Most of the fans believe the Bafana Bafana (nickname for the South African national team) have what it takes to get to the semif-inals at least, while European Champions Spain are considered the team favourite to lift the trophy.
Here is what some of the fans said:
Ron: "I'm a 62-year-old and I honestly did not think that South Africa would host the World Cup in my lifetime. I have been here my whole life and this is surely going to be one of the highlights of my time in this beautiful country. I am going to a South Africa game with my grandchildren, South Africa - New Zealand. I think South Africa can make us proud, but they will be nervous to start off."
Joe: "I'm Portuguese but seeing as Portugal is not in the competition I am supporting Italy. I don't want Brazil to win, but if Italy goes out I hope that Spain win. South Africa is lucky to be playing Spain last in the group, as they will be tough to crack, and if Bafana lose the first one it will be a rough tournament for them. I have tickets for Italy - USA and Spain - Iraq."
Sarah: "I'm not a big soccer fan, but I'm excited to be part of the host nation for the Confed Cup, it is amazing to think that the World Cup champions are here, and that big teams like Brazil and Spain will be spending the next two weeks in South Africa. Cannavaro and Toni are both very good looking, and I like Iker Casillas from Spain. Those are my favourite players."
Alessio: "Italy will win, I have not seen the training sessions or the arrival of the team, but I have followed them on SuperSport (television channel) and I will be going to Pretoria for Monday's game against USA. I think they will beat the Americans, and Egypt, but maybe Brazil will be a draw."
