In a report from FIFA.com, Germany and Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer was full of praise for Joachim Loew's German national team as their World Cup march continues.
"Germany have never before played like this," said the man credited in Germany for having invented the sweeper position. "The way they play, their style, is fantastic. Everybody on the move, wanting the ball - the team spirit is tremendous. Nobody in Germany expected to see them play so well. The players deserve this."
Beckenbauer went on to add: "You have to go back 20 years to a see as strong a German side as this, playing so well - when we won the title in 1990."
The 'Kaiser' also singled out midfield lynchpin Bastian Schweinsteiger for praise: "Schweinsteiger has had an exceptional season - he is the new superstar, the best player at the World Cup right now."
Germany next face Spain in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. When the teams last met in 2008, the Iberians were 1-0 winners and lifted the European Championship. Two years later, Beckenbauer predicts a repeat of the 1974 World Cup, at which he was German captain. In that tournament, Germany beat Spain before facing the Netherlands in the final.
