World Cup 2010: Goal.com Player Of The Day: Luis Suarez - Uruguay

Join Goal.com in saluting another World Cup player worthy of recognition...

Welcome to Goal.com's new World Cup feature: Goal.com Player of the Day. Each day a candidate will be put forward, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com Player of the Day #12: Luis Suarez
Club: Ajax
Country: Uruguay
Age: 23
Role: Attacker
Achievement: Fired his side to the first knockout round by scoring the only goal of the match against Mexico

Though the Ajax captain missed a good chance early on, he atoned for it with a well taken close range header to make it 1-0 for Uruguay before the interval. The forward continued to trouble the Mexican defence in the remainder of the game and always looked dangerous.

The highly rated attacker continues to sow the seeds of a lethal partnership with Forlan in attack, as both players have been Uruguay's absolute stars so far. Suarez has been involved in three of Uruguay's four goals at the World Cup.

Congratulations to Luis, Goal.com's 12th Player of the Day

Other worthy mentions go to...

Alexandros Tzorvas - Greece
The shot stopper was kept busy throughout the game and made some excellent saves. Denied Aguero, Maxi Rodriguez and Messi in the first half and went on to impress after the break. Not at fault for either of the two goals.

Siphiwe Tshabalala - South Africa
Made a name for himself in the tournament’s opening game with a spectacular goal, but enhanced his reputation in this encounter with a series of astute and unselfish passes. Nearly played Mphela in on several occasions and had a couple of good efforts himself.

Park Ji-Sung - South Korea
Ever the workhorse, the Manchester United star put in a real captain's shift against Nigeria. Despite having to settle for a draw, he ultimately led his country to the last 16 after carving out chance after chance.
