Fabio Capello is expected to resign as England manager if his team fail to beat Slovenia this week and are knocked out of the World Cup before the second round, according to a report from The Daily Mail.
Should that scenario unfold, then the FA have lined up Fulham manager Roy Hodgson as the Italian's successor, according to the report.
The Cottagers' boss is therefore believed to be stalling on accepting an offer to become Liverpool manager until after the game on Wednesday against the Slovenians.
Reports of dissatisfaction in the England camp have multiplied since Friday's goalless draw with Algeria that has made victory on Wednesday evening essential if the Three Lions are to progress in the tournament.
