Alberto Gilardino has said Italy have a good chance of defending the trophy they won in 2006, despite the quality of competition at the World Cup.
Coach Marcello Lippi is expected to announce a provisional 29-man squad on Sunday, but that list will be narrowed down to a final 23-man group that will head for South Africa.
And upon arrival, Gilardino has given a taste of what to expect from the Azzurri. He is aware of the usual suspects who are favourites to win, but claims his side also have just as good a chance of success.
"Apart from Argentina, Brazil, England and Spain, Italy are also among the favourites to win because we are the world champions," he is quoted as saying on Fiorentinanews.it.
Gilardino has scored 15 goals for Fiorentina this term and was part of Italy's winning team in 2006.
