World Cup 2010 Video Special: Former England Striker Teddy Sheringham Champions Jermain Defoe To Partner Wayne Rooney In Attack
Defoe's reliability in the box could be key...
By Zack Wilson
The man who helped the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of Euro '96 reckons Fabio Capello has several genuinely world class players upon whom to call upon.
"Without a doubt," said Sheringham, when asked on CNN's World Sport programme whether Capello's men could bring the trophy home from South Africa.
"I think you have to have a very good team. I think you have to have top players playing at the top of their game, and you have a little luck along the way."
Sheringham himself formed an impressive international strike partnership with Alan Shearer in his own playing days.
He feels that England need a natural goalscorer alongside Rooney in attack in South Africa, as genuine goalscoring chances at the highest level cna be hard to come by.
With that in mind, the former Spurs striker thinks that Capello should be looking towards White Hart Lane for Rooney's partner.
"Personally I think when you get to World Cups you might only get half a chance in a game so I think you've got to have at least two people on the pitch who're going to take that half chance," he said.
"For me Jermain Defoe would be the ideal partner. They play in similar but different areas of the pitch.
"They're both strikers but they go in different areas and that's good to accomodate Wayne Rooney and Jermain Deofe, given half a chance, will always hit the target."

And England's quality doesn't just lie up front, reckons Sheringham, who believes there is talent throughout the squad.
"We certainly have two of them and a very good manager as well who's getting things and if we get the rub of the green then you never know we could go all the way.
"I would say there's a few world class players with England. I think the two centre-backs in Rio Ferdinand and John Terry are very accomplished players.
"Wayne Rooney is playing at the top of his game at the moment and I would have to add Steven Gerrard, who's in the top five players in the world for me if he plays in his central midfield role."
Rooney has been grabbing headlines around the world over the last few weeks, as his blistering form for United continues.
Sheringham, who was accompanying the World Cup trophy on the London leg of its Coca Cola global tour, feels that the striker is now one of the top three players in the world.
"You only have to look at Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and I think you've got to put Rooney in the top three players in the world at the moment," he added.
"He's full of confidence and coming into his prime as a footballer and knows he's got the betaing of a lot of players in the world at the moment, and I think he can't wait for the World Cup to start.
"[Losing him] would be a massive blow. But ask Argentina if they took Messi out of their team, if Kaka's out the Brazil team what then?
"You can't go into a tournament hoping that someone's going to stay fit. You take it for granted that they will until things happen."

Here's the thoughts of Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, who felt his side deserved a point from the game.
"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.
"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.
"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

“The score made it look like it was an easy game, but it certainly wasn't.
(Strange... it looked pretty easy from where I was sitting, but hey.)
“I do not think it's over yet. I remember a clash between Milan and Deportivo la Coruna when Milan was also ahead by four goals, and in the end Deportivo eliminated Milan.
“I went into the Arsenal dressing room after the match to speak to Robin van Persie. I had agreed with him to swap shirts – my sons are big fans of his and he brought two for them. They will be delighted.
Van Bommel went on to talk about a possible move to PSV in the future, but was quick to point out his terms for the move.
“I've spoken with PSV, but we don't have an agreement yet. The club has to decide what they want.
“If Louis van Gaal turns out to be the new coach, I won't go.”
"Tonight everything went in the right direction and we did a very good match. You don't start a match thinking to win 4-0, but at the end i think we deserved it coz we played very well."
