Age will be no barrier for the centre-back should Diego Maradona offer him a place in South Africa...

Roberto Ayala - Zaragoza
Veteran defender Roberto Ayala, who currently plies his trade with Racing Club de Avellaneda, has indicated that he would like to return to the Argentina national team at the age of 36.

After failing to earn regular playing time at Real Zaragoza earlier this season, the former Milan and Valencia centre-back elected to return to his native country in January, when he had his contract in Spain terminated. Ayala was not clubless for long, with Racing quickly moving in to secure his services earlier this week.

Already the defender is looking ahead to the World Cup, hopeful regarding his chances of turning out for the Albicelestes, despite retiring with 115 caps in 2007 after a Copa America final in which he scored an own goal.

“I have not closed the door,” the player told the local press. “If I can be useful to the team I will not say no.”

Argentina boss Diego Maradona is known for his somewhat unpredictable selection policy, so there may yet be room for Ayala in his World Cup panel, though the coach has yet to pass comment on the matter.
