Having recuperated their number one ranking in the world last month, Spain have finished 2009 at the top of FIFA's World Rankings, as reported by Marca.
Despite losing to the United States in the summer's Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa, Vicente del Bosque's squad showed impeccable form throughout their World Cup Qualifying group, winning all of their 10 matches. They also confirmed their supremacy by dispatching Diego Maradona's Argentina last month in a friendly.
Having claimed their first trophy in over 40 years with the Euro 2008 championship, Spain will be hoping to carry their good form into next summer's World Cup in South Africa, rather than slip up early in the knock-out stages, as has become a national custom in tournaments past.
The latest release of the FIFA World Rankings shows the top ten are as follows:
