World Cup 2010: Gerard Gili Believes Algeria Will Make The Second Round
The Frenchman is certain that the Fennecs have what it takes to get out of Group C.
Former Cote d’Ivoire national team coach Gerard Gili has
told Al Heddaf that he feels that Algeria will make it to the second round of
South Africa 2010 next summer because he believes that the North Africans are
capable of beating the USA and Slovenia.
“This is a chance for Algeria to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup. It’s similar to the African Cup draw where you were lucky. Apart from England, who are among the best teams in the world, the USA and Slovenia are within your grasp,” he explained.
“To qualify for the second round, Algeria must defeat the Slovenians and Americans. I am never shy, I say what I think and the teams to beat in this group are Slovenia and the USA. In any case, I am confident that Algeria will pass and go to the second round of the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Gili, who was a goalkeeper in his playing days, was also asked about the performances of Faouzi Chaouchi during Algeria’s play-off win versus Egypt and said that he came away very impressed with the the ES Setif player.
“I think he made three decisive stops during the encounter which allowed Algeria to qualify. He had a determining role in the match. It matters little whether he’s the first or second 'keeper, what’s essential is that he was the 'keeper against Egypt and he was decisive, even if his team-mates contributed as well,” he added.
