World Cup 2010: Cape Town Would Welcome Tom Cruise And Co
A Cape Town house owner has secured a rental agreement for his property in Clifton to a celebrity for the value of R8 million for the month of the World Cup, and Capetonians are hoping that the celebrity in question is from Hollywood.
The Atlantic seaboard is one of the prime areas that the rich and
famous are looking to rent properties at during the tournament, with
some accommodation priced between R10,000 and R350,000 per day.
However, the R8 million (around $1-million) rental is the highest ever in South Africa, according to Ronnie Matthews Estates director Clinton Braude.
“The villa has been rented to an undisclosed international celebrity to use as a base during their month-long visit while in South Africa during the World Cup in June, and is situated in sought after Clifton – Cape Town's millionaires' playground.
“Many visitors to the World Cup have been holding out for the draw before confirming their accommodation,” said Braude, according to Kickoff.com.
Goal.com hit the streets of Cape Town to ask the residents of the host city who they are hoping to have renting the mansion during the World Cup. Alex said he hopes Jessica Alba made the deal for the R8 million pad in Clifton.
"Dark Angel I tell you. She would be so welcome in Cape Town, and would not look out of place enjoying our beautiful beaches. She could afford it too," he said with a smile.
His girlfriend Vanessa was not too keen on the idea. "I think she will be too busy making movies or posing for photo shoots. I would prefer a Hollywood stud like George Clooney or Jake Gyllenhaal. But surely the celebrity is doing it for the football, so it would be a fan of the World Cup, so maybe it is Tom Cruise. Ooh that would be nice."
Another Capetonian agreed with Vanessa, believing that the star of movies such as Top Gun and The Last Samurai could be the mysterious celebrity that will be gracing Cape Town's shores come 2010.
Regina said, "It would make sense for it to be Tom Cruise because he has the money and he often watches David Beckham play for the LA Galaxy, maybe he wants to see Beckham play for England. He would be welcome here, any celebrities who want to come will be welcomed positively."
No matter who the mystery celebrity is, it seems that they will be coming to enjoy the first World Cup on African soil, and choosing Cape Town as their base camp is not a bad idea at all, as the people are friendly and the city is buzzing with excitement ahead of next year's tournament.
