EXCLUSIVE: Carlos Kameni Has Turned Down Other Offers To Stay With Espanyol
Kameni spoke exclusively to Goal.com about his domestic and international career...
The goalkeeper also revealed that he turned down several offers in the summer to remain with the Barcelona based outfit.
Goal.com: Unbeatable against Morocco and qualifying directly for the 2010 World Cup. A good day for Cameroon...
Kameni: It's the best way to end the World Cup qualification phase. Keeping a clean sheet, winning at home and not depending on the results of others. We have achieved our dream and we will be in South Africa.
Goal.com: The phase started badly but improved for Cameroon.
Kameni: We faltered in the first two games, but afterwards everything changed for the better. Things went well and we won the next four games in a row. Fortunately we woke up just in time.
Goal.com: Were you afraid that you would miss out on South Africa?
Kameni: The group wasn't easy and was very even. I always trusted in myself and knew that we would still have a chance on the final day.
Goal.com: The next year is very demanding on you, with the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
Kameni: Yes, but Cameroon is one of the best teams in Africa and we always ask the best of ourselves. We must fight until the end and aim to do as well as possible. There is a sufficiently good team to do this.
Goal.com: How do you see your season, personally?
Kameni: I'm optimistic and I feel that I will enjoy great things with both Espanyol and Cameroon in the coming months.
Goal.com: How is the Cameroon coach, Paul Le Guen?
Kameni: Excellent. He connected quickly with the players and in these months we have improved a lot in tactical aspects and being united as a team. We would like him to continue in his role and I believe that the Federation will renew [his contract].
Goal.com: Do you regret anything about continuing with Espanyol?
Kameni: I had interesting offers, but I chose to continue with the club for reasons that are not just about football. I have shared many good things with the club and I want to win something with them. That's why I'm continuing here.
