Centre-back Diego Lugano proved to be Uruguay's match-winner in their weekend World Cup play-off against Costa Rica, but despite registering a victory, coach Oscar Tabarez was not entirely satisfied with the performance.

"This result is very important. Winning away is not easy. We have passed a very difficult test in a very even game," Tabarez was quoted as telling the press.

Home player Randall Azofeifa was sent-off early in the second half, but this did not help Uruguay, according to their trainer.

"The 1-0 score is excellent, but we are unhappy with our form," the ex-Milan coach lamented. "Sometimes we controlled the game and Costa Rica's most skilful players. But Costa Rica's most dangerous spell was when they were playing with ten men, and we made a mistake by playing too defensively in the second half.

"Costa Rica showed calmness even with ten men. This match is now in the past. We are focused on Wednesday [when the second leg takes place]. We have had a dream for three-and-a-half years and we have the chance to make it come true," concluded the Uruguay coach.

La Celeste Olímpica are aware that a draw will suit them fine on Wednesday evening.
