The game began at a slow pace, with neither side wanting to give away too much in the early stages. Fans in the stadium were hoping for a lively end to the qualifying campaign, with the home side already qualified for Angola 2010.
The encounter meant a great deal more to Malawi however, as the Flames were fighting for the last AFCON spot alongside rivals Guinea who were up against Ivory Coast in the group’s other game.
Burkina Faso’s match against Malawi was a boring goalless affair until the half time break.
The second half gave the sides another chance to show their supporters what they were capable of, and once again it was Moumouni Dagano who shone brightest, scoring just after the restart to give the home side the lead.
Malawi had no reply following the goal, and they were fortunate enough to have their rivals for the African Cup of Nations spot playing against one of the continent’s best ever sides in Ivory Coast, as the Elephants did the Flames a favour and beat Guinea, allowing Malawi to take the final African Cup of Nations place in the group, one point above last placed Guinea.
