The saga is finally over, and Portugal will not have the services of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo for their World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Ronaldo left Madrid earlier today to be inspected by the Portuguese medical staff in Lisbon, and they have now corroborated the club's reports with their own tests and released the player from international duty.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) report on their official website that they took Ronaldo straight to a clinic in Lisbon, where he underwent an MRI scan.

This determined that the player was injured, as los Blancos had maintained all along, and that he would not be able to appear in either leg of the play-off.

Ronaldo has now boarded Florentino Perez's private jet to bring him back to the Spanish capital, where he will continue his rehabilitation programme. The 24-year-old is due to travel to Amsterdam in a little under two weeks to meet with Dr. Niek van Dijk to determine how well his recovery is progressing.
