As a result, Manuel Pellegrini has scorned calls for 'CR9' to be selected by Carlos Queiroz for Portugal's World Cup play-off with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
"It's impossible for Cristiano to play for Portugal," he is quoted as saying by Sport.
"I'm sorry for the national team and for the player, but it's been some time since he trained and he still has pains."
Pellegrini also revealed that Ronaldo is upset about the length of his injury, but is hopeful that the 24-year-old will be back in action soon.
"Cristiano is emotionally troubled. He's been injured for a while and he had hoped to play this week, but the doctors said no.
"The medical staff are keeping an eye on his progress. Hopefully he will be back as soon as possible because he's a very important player for us.
"It's logical that Portugal are asking about him but they know that the player is not in a condition to play. If he was then we would have used him before," he concluded.
