The second round Premier Soccer League clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will mark the official opening match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
Mbombela 2010 Manager of Marketing and Events, Ronny Moyo, told KickOff.com that the match at the impressive stadium, which was the centre of a number of workers’ strikes and student protests, has already been confirmed.
He added that the venue, which will be opened officially on November 22, will also host other games before the 2010 World Cup kicks off.
A ‘Joyous Celebration’ concert on December 12 will precede the Chiefs-Sundowns game. This will be followed by a Mayoral Golf Challenge on December 20.
“Among other high profile teams that will use the stadium are Ghana’s Black Stars, who have chosen Nelspruit as their base camp for the World Cup. The Ghanaians are expected to play a match against either Portugal or Serbia on March 3 next year,” Moyo said.
Another high-profile game slated for the stadium pits Bidvest Wits against top Danish side Brondby on a date yet to be confirmed.
