Thierry Henry & Karim Benzema Pleased With France Performance Against Austria

It was smiles all round in Paris after Wednesday's match. The two goal scorers were pleased with the way things went...

Club rivals Thierry Henry of Barcelona and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid combined splendidly to help France to a 3-1 victory over Austria on Wednesday evening, and both men were delighted that les Bleus’ World Cup qualification campaign seems to be back on track.

After a sticky qualifying process, les Bleus have moved into the play-offs with some strong momentum at their back, having defeated the Faroe Islands 5-0 on Saturday and Austria 3-1 on Wednesday. Both Benzema and Henry registered goals, which, along with an effort from Andre-Pierre Gignac, proved too much for the Austrians, whose sole reply came early in the second half from Marc Janko.

“It was a good game of football, we all enjoyed it,” noted Benzema, who opened the scoring with a diving header from a Florent Malouda cross, to the press after the encounter. “It’s been a while since I started a game with France, and it went well overall. I’m happy. That everyone had a good game is nice too.”

Meanwhile, Henry focused more on the team performance, explaining, “It was a good start to the match. Maybe not the first ten minutes, but then we started playing, pressing up to win the ball and counterattack. We created chances, we have goals, there were moments of beauty, which mean this game can be considered good momentum for the play-offs. The coach [Raymond Domenech] rotated his team, but how we played was the same.

“Add eight goals in two games, it feels good, but I hope we’re not finished there. We’re talking about attackers who’ve scored, and a beautiful game - it's better to prepare for the play-offs like that.”

Certainly the impressive performances of the last few days have caused optimism in l’Hexagone. France are once again playing with offensive fluidity and great confidence, which does not auger well for those who will meet them in November.
