France Coach Raymond Domenech: This Is What We’ve Been Trying To Do For A While
For once, the coach was left extremely satisfied by what he saw at the Stade de France last night. He hopes that the 3-1 victory over Austria can be used as a building block for success...
Speaking after watching his France defeat Austria 3-1 in Paris on Wednesday night, head coach Raymond Domenech declared that the up-tempo performance les Bleus produced was something the team have been building up to over the past few months.
France took an early lead through Karim Benzema, who dived headlong to knock home a cross from Florent Malouda, and would double that advantage before the break via a Thierry Henry penalty. Although Marc Janko briefly gave the visitors hope with a predatory tap-in, substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac put the game out of reach for the guests.
“We scored some good goals and there were some really good sequences of play,” Domenech beamed to the assembled press after the match.
“There was a group of 24 players, plus those who weren’t there, who show their determination every time. They want to go ahead, get carried away in the match and score – it’s the scoring that I love.
“This is what we’ve been trying to do for a while.
“Whenever we enter the field, we’re all in the same state of mind: we want to go to South Africa and we know what to do.”
Looking ahead to the play-offs next month, Domenech has no preference as to who France tackle.
“My preference is qualification for the World Cup,” he declared.
“Whatever the team, it will be complicated, they will want to hang on, to fight. There are two matches, and everyone has a chance.”
Les Bleus will learn their fate as to their play-off opponents when the draw takes place in Zurich on October 19.
